Tips and Strategies
for Writing and Editing the Personal Statement or Statement of Purpose

Your Personal Statement should tell the reader who you are, where you come from, how you got where you are today, and where you want to go from here, especially your maximum contribution to your community, society, and profession. I like to include some indication of all of this in the first paragraph, often including the University to which I the applicant is applying. Many applicants make the mistake of talking almost exclusively about the past, how they got to the point where they are at today, but this is a mistake. Ideally, you want to spend half of the allowed space talking about what you want to do in the future and why, how you want to use the professional degree or training that you seek to earn.

If you decide to become my premium service client at US$299.00, I will become your spin doctor. I will use the information that you provide to express the content in the most compelling way, to present your story in a convincing and admirable way that causes the selection committee to admire and empathize with your aspirations and long term plans for contributing to your community and profession. My role is like that of an actor, since I put myself in your shoes. I present your story leading up to your long term goals as ambitious, compassionate, reasonable, and well suited to your life experiences and qualifications. I also help many clients articulate why they are an especially good fit with the university to which they are applying, which is often a central, critical point that should not be overlooked.
