From the experience that I have acquired to date in relating to those who suffer difficulties in speech communication, it is clear to me that it takes a particular type of person to treat speech disorders successfully; that empathy, determination, and enormous patience, together with substantial technical knowledge and skills are called for to achieve optimum outcomes. I believe that I possess these personal qualities and characteristics and am confident that I have the academic capability to excel in the program and beyond it. My goal is to work with adults in a hospital setting and pursue research in the areas of Aphasia and Dysphasia, eventually pursuing a Ph.D.
In the summer of 2015, I shadowed a Speech Pathologist at the VA hospital in XXXX, IL. I observed tracheotomies and esophagus valve replacements. I also attended therapy sessions for clients suffering from dysphagia and aphasia, including swallow tests. This provided an opportunity to witness the enormously positive effect that an enthusiastic and well-trained clinician can offer and the range of problems they deal with. I am working with family and clinician with a Down’s Syndrome ‘middle-schooler’ to assist her in achieving her potential, which is considerable. It has given me great satisfaction to witness the progress that she has made and continues to create and play a part in her development.
I currently work as a researcher in the Developmental Psycholinguistics Lab with XXXX in XXXX, Kansas. I have sought exposure to a research environment to undertake a Ph.D. research project in the future. This experience has been of great value in understanding research techniques and the qualities required of a successful researcher, which I am determined to develop.
In addition to my bachelor's degree program, I shall shortly enroll in a course entitled ‘Introduction to Audiological Assessment and Rehabilitation’ to enhance the relevant skills and knowledge I am acquiring. I am also fluent in American Sign Language, having completed three semesters of study. I also have a basic understanding of French, which I intend to enhance when other commitments permit.
Dedicated clinicians must have outside interests and recreations to ensure a balanced and rounded personality. In addition to swimming and reading, I love physically demanding activities such as canoeing, rafting, zip lining, skydiving, and parasailing. I am also reasonably well-traveled due to my membership in ‘People to People, an organization whose mission is to further international understanding and friendship through educational, cultural, and humanitarian activities involving the exchange of ideas and experiences directly among people of different countries and diverse cultures.
I also undertake a significant amount of voluntary and charity-raising activities through my membership in various organizations, including ‘Family Promise,’ ‘Big Brothers, Big Sisters, ‘Global Partners,’ and ‘The Lawrence Humane Society.’ I have studied, worked, and socialized with people from many social and cultural backgrounds and positively enjoy doing so.
To summarize, I am confident that I have the academic potential, essential experience, knowledge and background, personal attributes, and, most of all, a genuine passion for this area of study and work to enable me to 'add value' to the program if selected, and to make a significant and positive difference to the lives of my future clients.
