I was born and raised in White Plains, with the most memorable experience of my childhood being the two years that I spent in my parents' native Nigeria. This direct and prolonged exposure from 9 to 11 years of age inspired me to struggle to succeed, not just for myself, but for my people as well, and development and social justice in Nigeria and all of Africa, as well as America.
My long-term goal is to practice law, international and activist law, on behalf of women, people of color, and particularly the Global South. I know this requires a vast intellectual foundation, and I turn to your graduate program in Sociology at XXXX University, where I hope to earn the MA Degree. I am convinced that XXXX is uniquely suited to provide me with the intellectual tools I will need later as an activist attorney.
I am a privileged Black girl with a progressive attitude who dreams of social change, reconciliation, and justice. Thus, XXXX College of Criminal Justice appeared to be an excellent choice for my undergraduate studies in Political Science, and I earned my BA in 2006. and then completed a Paralegal Studies Certificate Program at XXXX College. But I am still intellectually hungry. I want to go to law school as a more powerful woman with a master's degree in Sociology under my belt.
I want to spend most of my time researching why people do the things that they do: all the most significant theorists, and how to best interpret the effects of behavior, especially for legal purposes. I seek a whole immersion experience in the impact of one's environment on their behavior, social psychology, the sociology of work, gender roles, etc. I am especially interested in doing graduate work in poverty along social class lines, both in America and with respect to developing countries, as well as drug and alcohol abuse.
Earning the Master's in at XXXX University will give me the intellectual tools to become the kind of attorney that is my dream for the future. I am a cosmopolitan woman with diverse interests. In addition to my native Ibo from Nigeria, I can also read and write some French and Spanish.
Thank you for considering my application to the MA in Sociology Program at XXXX.
